How Styling Can Transform a Space: A Screened Porch Story
In the design process, each stage plays an essential role, but the final layer—the styling—is where magic can happen. It’s the step that brings personality and warmth to the space, those chosen details bring a room to life, making it feel warm, inviting, and truly complete.
This was never more evident to me than in a recent project I worked on for The Dan Company, a Nashville, TN based team that consistently creates beautiful and thoughtfully designed spaces.
They’d just finished building a gorgeous screened outdoor porch, and they brought me in to style the space before their professional photographer, TN Home Tour, captured it.
Before: A Blank Canvas
The porch was already lovely, with its thoughtful design and sturdy construction. The homeowner already had a beautiful foundation in place with a slipcovered sofa and chairs, but the space needed that final touch to really shine.
But without the finishing details, it felt a bit bare—a functional space that hadn’t quite found its personality yet.
After: A Welcoming Retreat
Once I added the styling pieces, the space completely transformed. Furry throw pillows, cozy blankets, brought in just the right amount of texture and color. A wooden tray on the poufs was a great spot for a french press full of coffee and fresh buttery croissants from the local bakery adding even more welcoming vibes. And a couple of strategically placed side tables give you a sense that the space is ready for you to sink in and enjoy that fresh steaming cup of joe.
The result was a screened porch that didn’t just look beautiful—it felt beautiful. The styling pieces made it a place you’d want to linger, whether sipping coffee in the morning or enjoying an evening with friends around the fireplace.
