Plant Shopping Tips for Creating Your Perfect Outdoor Oasis

Hey there! The itch to dig in the dirt is coming in strong over here. I'm plotting and planning for my flower beds and planters. I'll be spending time at my favorite local nursery here in Nashville soon. I know going in that I have to rein myself in. Once I get in the nursery I just wanna pick up every beautiful plant I see, and there are plenty of gorgeous ones to choose from. But there's a few guidelines I try to keep in the front of my mind when I'm shopping. Here's my list of self imposed rules when plant shopping:

1. Color Coordination is Key

Just like in interior design, creating a cohesive color palette for your plants can work wonders. While the temptation to grab every beautiful plant in sight is real, sticking to a specific color palette will add a lot of harmony to your flower beds and planters.

2. Height Matters

Like in interior design, having elements of a variety of heights in the flower bed or container adds a ton of visual interest to your outdoor spaces.  So mix tall, bushy, and cascading plants to create an organic look.

3. Non-blooming Greenery Adds Depth

So much depth can be added with plants that don't flower but instead offer up tons of interest in their shapes and textures. From their velvety leaves to their spiky fronds, greenery comes in a myriad of hues, ranging from lush  emerald tones to delicate celadon, classic evergreen, and refreshing honeydew shades. When selecting your greenery, choose a mixture of greenery that enhances and complements your chosen color palette.

4. Mix Up the Textures

Look for plants that have different textures. In the same way that height adds visual interest, texture plays a big role in captivating attention. So keep that in mind when you are picking out your posies and greenery.  Look for plants that don’t have all the same feel and finish to them.

5. Sunlight or Shade?

Before you fall in love with a plant, check its lighting needs and make sure it’s compatible with the conditions you plan to put it into. It’s no fun to plant all your gorgeous selections  and then, a few weeks later, watch them struggle due to the wrong amount of light they’re getting.

6. Fertilize!

Don't forget to fertilize. Not just when you first transplant your beautiful plants, but as often as your fertilizer suggests. Your plants will thank you!

So, the next time you find yourself wandering the aisles of your favorite nursery keep these tips in mind. With a little bit of planning you’ll transform your outdoor space into a stylish oasis that’s as beautiful as it is inviting!
